Botox, fillers, lasers and cosmetic surgery have evolved in the past years. Leaps and bounds have also been made to help individuals counter signs of aging. When fillers and Botox were first introduced to a wider market, there were mixed reactions surrounding this innovation. There were jokes thrown around about how faces pumped with Botox looked unusually emotionless. Although a lot of shade has been thrown at Botulinum toxins, I’ve personally found a handful of amazing dermatologists and cosmetic surgeons who can yield magic with their syringe–and still make their clients look like themselves.
Beauty and anti-aging devotees are typically open to trying anything and everything under the sun. Some are a hit, others a miss. As fine lines and wrinkles began to drain away traces of a vibrant youth, regular Botox treatments became part of the beauty regimen. It was only when a dear friend and wellness guru pointed out that this toxin was essentially a “miracle poison,” that I began to search for less invasive, healthier yet equally effective solutions. “In the end, it’s your lifestyle that will help you stay young,” said my friend.
Thinning lips that appear chapped is another sad indication that your’e way past your musical festival and clubbing days. It is a result of collagen loss, caused by slower production of this essential protein. Lip flippers are often the quick fix, but it comes with the same amount of horror stories as Botox. Photos of individuals whose lips have been filled out of proportion were cautionary tales that have kept me from booking a lip filler treatment. A few innovative anti aging brands have attempted to bring age-defying results to lips via topical application, but with little to no effect. At best, they did a good job of hydrating winter lips.
When a pre launch sample of Ourself Lip Fillers arrived, the promise was compelling enough to give topical solutions a second look. “Patented sub-topical technology is able to preferentially target specific layers of the skin, as deep as the subcutaneous layer, to address some of the most prevalent aesthetic concerns,” said the pitch. The filler was presented in a white refill tube that fit into a silver, pen-like container. Immediately, it made for a sleek addition in the makeup bag.
It glided over the surface like an ultra lightweight liquid gloss. Within seconds, lips were visibly fuller and moisturized. Appearance of lip lines and surface chapping had also disappeared. They were replaced by a beautiful bee-bitten rosy shade. It was nothing like the topical lip fillers I’ve ever tried in the past. And I’ve tested out just as many wanna-be topical lip fillers as I have kissed frogs.
During a fun Zoom meet with Ourself Founders Lauren Otsuki and Vimla Black-Gupta, the industry disruptors explain, “We developed a peptide called Intide, which intuitively targets and delivers results on areas of your skin where it matters. This is something that most formulations are unable to achieve.” The team working behind the breakthrough company also created an multphasic vessel for delivering these Intides. Lauren and Vimla furthers, “This allows us to accurately target problems and be more efficient in restoring skin youth.”
Ourself Lip Fillers, which is the first among a few other game-changing skin solutions, utilizes these innovations so hyaluronic acid is delivered to the deepest layers of lips. The team adds, “This enables visible resiliency in your lips–so they look more like the lips you once knew. More plump. Smooth and supple, with a non-sticky, natural matte finish.” A Vitamin B3-Derived color enhancer brought out a natural rosy shade. Ourself Lip Fillers wore so comfortably on lips that I actually skipped the brand’s Lip Moisturizer. After meeting the founders, I found out that I was missing out.
The Lip Moisturizer, it turns out, was a dream especially for women who are lazy about lipstick or lip gloss application. Like its Lip Filler partner, this extremely nourishing formula is weightless. It cushions delicate lips with hyaluronic acid, vitamin E, cupuacu seed butter and nutrient rich botanicals to help condition lips that are on its way back to its youthful glory. Both Lauren and Vimla agree, “It helps amplify the benefits of your Lip Filler. At the same time, the Lip Moisturizer also works well as a daytime gloss.” As I streamlined the makeup kit to include only five key products, this lip duo were first in the bag.
The founders of Ourself were clear about their mission and goals when they launched their brand just last February. “The aim is to bring back the face we knew when we were younger; not a third face,” said Lauren. Some might want to call it freezing time or reversing the clock. At Ourself, it’s highlighting and enhancing the best version of yourself–no matter the number of times one has gone around the sun.
