Outerwear 2021/22
When it comes to a man’s wardrobe, it is generally filled with staple pieces that either separate him from the pack or provide him with ultimate versatility. When it comes to style, most men prefer the path less complicated. And for good reason. Until now. This fall/winter season, even conservative styles have developed into dynamic and stylish hybrids to cater to the tastes of Gen Z and millenials – as their purchasing power and stylish needs come to a leading position of great importance to the fashion business overall.
Whether you’re a streetwear connoisseur or a traditional man, I’d bet my bottom dollar that you’re hunting for those pieces that will highlight your developed character and add spark to your wardrobe for years to come.
When I speak about hybrids in men’s fashion, outerwear comes to mind. In short, outerwear has seemingly transitioned to a new frontier by providing men with a variety of options. For example, these days outerwear can be in the form of an elite puffer-vest, slick trench coat, the coolest bomber jacket as well as an abundant number of racy options to choose from. In my expert opinion, hybrid-outerwear is an essential for every American man seeking to be on trend; by this is I mean it is time to donate the old pieces – they can not serve you the way the fresh hybrids can.
This season, styles have never been more versatile – with technically-advanced fabrics, stylish hardware embellishments and colors and textures that will get heads turning.
For guys wishing to flex that active city-slicker style, I can only suggest that you make an attempt to master the layering look. This style will keep you on trend while looking fantastic- not to mention, keep you warm and protected from the elements of inclimate weather.
History of Outerwear:
The first outerwear styles seemingly originated during the Middle Ages or early Renaissance. For example, the jerkin, which is a more fitted version of the short tunic worn by working-class men during that time. Like many items in menswear apparel; the history of coats is deeply-rooted in both military and naval backgrounds.
The coat has been around since the 1800s. During that time, the first variation was made with coarse wool fabric and worn by seafaring Dutchmen. But let it be known that the British navy started the popularisation of the jacket. It was a version of the coat that was similarly designed for naval duties, as a uniform for petty officers. Soon thereafter, the US Navy adopted the coat and using the item for “reefers”. Reefer was a term used to describe the sailors who were responsible for the task of climbing up the rigging on the great sailing ships of that time. Back then, the silhouette was relatively form-fitting to keep out harsh winds. In addition, the piece was designed with flared out hips that made it easier for the navy officers to climb the ropes while sailing the high ( and many times rough) seas.
At that time, most of the coats were double-breasted—which could be buttoned all the way up to protect one from the harsh elements of nature. And pockets provided easy access to personal items- many needed while on deck.
Nearly all coats made for seafaring men featured plastic or brass buttons— which bore an anchor design imprinted in them. The fabrics used were mostly made from a blend of wool and acrylic, which was tightly woven and heat-treated. This resulted in the development of a very warm item as well as a water-and-wind resistant fabric which was ready to take-on the unpredictable weather conditions that a navy officer would experience.
Hybrid Outerwear:
Fast forward to this 2021/22 season and you’ll find that hybrid outerwear continues to create essential menswear pieces for the modern man. Product offerings this season include items designed with cool hardware that lends a masculine and racy feel, snap-on removable hoods for versatility that combines style and function. There are also handsome and sophisticated bombers- many with a sherpa collar and quilted interior for extra warmth. And Brunello Cucinelli along with the prestige of artisan workmanship, developed handcrafted techniques that render the bomber jacket a refined and versatile wardrobe piece.
And if it is true “Nordic Luxury” that you are looking for, this season Swedish brand Eton joined creative forces with knitwear specialist Dale of Norway to design and create a limited-edition knitted sweater jacket, commonly known as ‘swacket’. Upon reviewing this well-developed and wicked styled hybrid, I decided to purchase one for myself at once. More to my point, the name is catchy and I look forward to telling others about it.
Autumn is surely in full-swing now and before you know it, winter 21/22 will be in full effect. With that being said, temperatures will be dropping significantly. Here, my team and I have compiled a list of what we believe to be the best outerwear pieces add to your wardrobe, stand-out in style and stay warm this season.
