Sometimes it’s the subtleties that count the most. Take watch dial colors. First there were ordinary navy blue dials, then bright, intense blue dials, and they have reigned supreme for the past five years. Now, it’s all about ice blue, and as it turns out, there are several shades of the new blue hue. These five watches, from Breitling, Rolex, Cartier, A. Lange & Söhne and Swatch/Omega, demonstrate that icy blue is the new black for luxury watches. No collection should be without one.
Breitling Navitimer B02 Chronograph 43. Breitling’s legendary flagship collection turns 70 this year, but a new colored dial collection makes it one of the most modern sports watches out there. Aside from this brilliant ice blue dial (other cool shades include light or dark green, copper, black, silver), modern refinements include a flatter version of the signature slide rule, a domed crystal and a slimmer rotor on the COSC certified caliber 01.
Rolex Oyster Perpetual Day-Date 40. This particular shade of ice blue on a Rolex always signifies the watch has a platinum case, and Rolex has been using it since long before ice blue became a thing. This year, the color is applied to the first platinum edition of the Day-Date 40, also known as “the president’s watch.” The glossy dial is given a sunray finish, topped with gold markers and Roman numerals.
Cartier Panther. Cartier is putting its classic, usually rather subdued Panther out there in three classy new dial colors this year, including this shade. Cartier calls it midnight blue, but it looks icy blue thanks to the way light reflects off the new satin finish and the diagonal line that divides the color gradations. There are also new golden plum and black dial options. The movement is quartz.
Bioceramic MoonSwatch. Yes, this is the watch people all over the world, except in Ukraine, were lining up around the block for a few weeks ago. They’re sold out for now, but said to be heading for a restock in the months ahead. Swatch Group paired two of its brands, Swatch and Omega, for this take on the Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch, only in Bioceramic, a mix of two-thirds ceramic and one-third material derived from castor oil.
A. Lange & Söhne Odysseus. The Odysseus, which launched in 2019, is Lange’s brilliant entry into the steel bracelet sports watch category. This new titanium version is lightweight, durable and beautifully finished on the case and bracelet, with a combination of polished, brushed and matte surfaces – note the polished edges on every link in the bracelet. The dial is described as ice blue, but sometimes appears gray, depending on the light.
