Tickets will shortly go on sale for two new Adventures by Disney cruises to Svalbard in 2023. Named the Arctic Expedition Cruise, the 10-day trip explores the western coastline of Spitsbergen, the largest island in this remote Arctic archipelago that polar bears call home.
The two new itineraries in June and July 2023 are the latest family-focused expedition cruises offered by Disney, which already includes destinations like Antarctica and the Galapagos Islands.
A luxury trip to the top of the world
The 10-day itinerary starts and ends in Oslo, the Norwegian capital city. After a welcome dinner and overnight stay in Oslo, passengers will fly to Longyearbyen, where the voyage begins and ends. Home to little more than 2,000 people, Longyearbyen is the northernmost airport in the world with regularly scheduled flights.
In Longyeabryen, passengers will board Le Boreal, specially chartered for the trip from Ponant. The vessel features all-luxury staterooms and suites for a total capacity of 264 passengers.
Onboard amenities include a spa, theater and pool along with scheduled activities for adults and children ranging from movies and trivia contests to evening live music and pool parties. However, it’s the coastline of Svalbard that is sure to steal the show.
Because of the unique natural environment of Svalbard, the itinerary from days 3 to 8 will be kept flexible. Weather conditions and the movement of ice will be taken into account as the captain chooses the best spots for closer exploration by Zodiac.
Likely highlights of the tour include the scientific research settlement Ny-Ålesund, the ‘wall of ice’ Monaco glacier, the scenic Raudfjord and the glacial fjord and bird sanctuary of the Kongsfjord.
Wildlife includes wild reindeer and arctic foxes together with many species of birdlife, plus there’s always the chance of a polar bear encounter. Presentations from leading naturalists will help deepen your understanding of this unique region.
Prices for the Svalbard cruise start at $12,000 per person, which includes all meals, excursions, activities, and internal flights between Oslo and Svalbard. Booking opens next week for previous Disney cruise guests. Should rooms remain, general booking will open on November 12.
The company welcomes children from ages 8 and up, but recommends children to be at least 10 years old at the time of travel due to the variable weather conditions and encounters with wild animals.
