The pandemic has changed how we all travel. Whether for business or pleasure, traveling is not as easy as it once was. And if you want to stay in another country for an extended amount of time, that hassle is exacerbated. However, Blueground is working to change all that. Blueground is a ‘proptech company’ offering a curated network of thousands of quality, fully furnished apartments in major cities around the world for stays of a month or more.
Co-founded in 2013 in Athens, Greece, by CEO Alex Chatzieleftheriou after he spent five years living out of hotels in 12 different cities as a business consultant, he wanted to fix a major issue that he personally experienced in his line of work. Finding a fully furnished apartment, for a short-term stay is difficult as an expat. He realized that there was a need for flexible leases around furnished, high end apartments in the world’s major cities.
According to Alex Chatzieleftheriou, co-founder and CEO, Blueground, “I was stuck staying in hotels, which never felt like home to me. This is what Blueground offers guests- a trusted, quality home, expertly designed that they can view online, book with a few clicks, and simply show up with their personal items and start living. Our guests have the peace of mind and the confidence they need to move around from city to city.” Blueground makes renting easy through their online search and booking process and offer flexible contract terms and lengths.
How Blueground Works
Unlike searching for a long term stay on your own, with Blueground, guests have access to:
- A real-time, online booking platform
- 24/7 support through their mobile app
- In-app check-in and check-out
- A portfolio of service partners offering things like airport transfers, home cleaning and more
- Flexible contract terms
So basically, Blueground has made it as easy as booking a hotel for a long term stay. And unlike services where guests rent out privately owned homes, these apartments are operated by Blueground so the quality, consistency and safety are guaranteed.
Blueground is currently live in 18 cities with over 5,500 apartments. Guests can book stays in Athens, Istanbul, Dubai, New York, Boston, DC, LA, Chicago, San Fran, Seattle, Paris, London, Vienna, Denver, Austin, Berlin, Madrid, and Zurich. And there are also some exciting cities on the horizon including Miami, Lisbon, Brussels, Luxembourg, Copenhagen, and Barcelona coming later this year.
Why Are People Choosing Blueground
During the pandemic, business relocations halted—however, with restrictions lifting, there is currently a boom of business-related relocations happening.
According to Alex Chatzieleftheriou, co-founder and CEO, Blueground, “What we can see now is a significant increase in relocations, as offices plan for reopening and people’s desires to connect in person change. This new ‘remote employee’ segment has emerged, and companies are increasingly allowing for flexibility and facilitating remote working. We expect companies to steadily introduce new initiatives where they will support remote working, effectively blurring the line of what used to be the definition of a business trip.” In fact, according to Blueground, “81% of our guests choose Blueground because all they need to do is quite literally show up and start living.”
Blueground hosted 50% more guests in 2021 than in 2020 – nearly 20,000 people throughout the year and many of these guests were employees from places like Apple, Tesla, Amazon, Uber, Netflix, etc. The company also exceeded $145m in revenue and maintained an average 94% global occupancy throughout last year. Business travel is back—it just looks a little different.
