A late go-ahead 1-yard touchdown toss from Matthew Stafford to Cooper Kupp propelled the Los Angeles Rams to a 23-20 win over the Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl LVI. The deciding score with 90 seconds left was Kupp’s 8th reception of the game and 2nd touchdown. Kupp was voted the Super Bowl Most Valuable Player and had 92 receiving yards in victory.
The Rams won the game, but failed to cover the point spread, which was 4-points and moved to -4.5 on game day. Bengals bettors who took the points won, but Cincinnati on the moneyline to win the game outright was a very popular bet at many sportsbooks.
However, with prop bets driving 40-50% of the handle at many sportsbooks, there was much more on the line for bettors throughout the entertaining Super Bowl between the Rams and Bengals.
Super Bowl Recap and Popular Props
The Super Bowl lived up to the hype, and prop bets provided plenty of entertainment and revenue for leading online sportsbooks. Following the opening coin toss which was heads, the Bengals deferred for the second half and the Rams got the ball to start the game. The team that has won the coin toss has now lost eight consecutive Super Bowls.
Neither team scored on their opening possession, but Matthew Stafford connected with Odell Beckham for a 17-yard strike just over eight minutes into the game to give the Rams a 7-0 lead. Following a Bengals field goal by Evan McPherson to close the first quarter, Stafford connected with Cooper Kupp for 11 yards to give the Rams a 13-3 lead two minutes into the second quarter. Matt Gay missed the extra point kick, and that would prove pivotal in the betting outcome.
Joe Burrow connected on a controversial 75 yard bomb to Tee Higgins on the first of the second half to put the Bengals in front 17-13. Higgins longest receiving prop of 22.5 yards became an instant winner, and the Bengals added a field goal shortly after off a Rams tipped pass interception to lead 20-13. With 10 minutes still to go in the third quarter, the in-play live betting moved the over/under up to 53.5, and it looked like was scoring would continue at a strong second half pace.
But the Bengals couldn’t protect QB Joe Burrow, who was sacked a Super Bowl record-tying seven times, including five in the third quarter.
Cincinnati would not score again over the final 25 minutes. The Rams added a field goal to cut the margin to 20-16, and no more points were scored until the Rams final drive of the game ended with the Cooper Kupp touchdown to provided the final margin of victory for the Rams, 23-20.
