Widely regarded as one of the world’s leading skincare experts and aestheticians, Toska Husted has been fortunate to have lived in vibrant cities all over the globe, including London, Abu Dhabi, and Charleston.
But it’s Charlotte, North Carolina, the place she’s called home for nearly six years, that’s charmed her the most. After several local clients talked up the Queen City while Husted was working and living in Charleston, she made the drive up to scope things out. The rest, as they say, is history.
Though Husted’s loved Charlotte since day one, she’s noticed even more positive changes in recent years. “It almost feels like a whole new city,” she says. “It’s even more progressive, but still blends the old and new.” Husted also appreciates being able to experience four true seasons – “though the winters are mild,” she admits – the slower pace of life, and most importantly, the warm and supportive local community.
As for why she’s one of the most sought-after facialists – her client roster includes the world’s most famous faces, like Jennifer Aniston, Kim Kardashian, and Jennifer Lopez – it comes down to her highly individualized and results-driven approach. She explains, “I look at every client with fresh eyes, so each session is truly customized.”
And in a time when other beauty practitioners seem preoccupied with social media, trends, and fads, Husted enlists a more old-school approach: she works hard, and puts in her time at her impossibly chic Southpark salon. No wonder her waitlist is over a year. But if you’re having a tough time booking with Toska, then try Biologique Recherche’s P50 Lotion, which she calls “a facial in a bottle.”
Below, Husted opens up her little black book of Charlotte.
Kid Cashew: “This is my favorite restaurant in Charlotte. Everything is super fresh here. There’s no freezer, fryer, or heat lamps. I also love that it’s in my neighborhood. The meatballs are really great.”
Copper: This is a more contemporary and upscale Indian restaurant, but it’s still very authentic. Order the Paneer Tikka ‘Kadhai Masala.’ It’s spicy, with so many rich flavors.”
Rooster’s Wood-Fired Kitchen: “This spot is locally-owned, and farm-to-table. The owner Jim Noble is a popular chef, and I like that the menu is small but driven by quality. I love the beef short rib, roasted chicken pizza, and the burrata, which changes with the seasons.”
Reid’s Fine Foods Restaurant: “Besides being so close to my work, this is a real establishment that’s been in the area for a long time. It’s good for a casual lunch. I recommend the Berry Salad and Caramel Cake.”
Peppervine: “Everything here is just beautiful at this progressive American restaurant. They have lots of small plates, and their yeast rolls are amazing. Try the Misty-Eyed Margarita. The purple color is so pretty.”
Foxcroft Wine Co: “Located in Dilworth, this is a wine bar with a great selection of wines, but also surprisingly good food.”
Charles Proper & Co: “See Dhiran Mistry for the best haircut in Charlotte. He has amazing technique, and you’ll want to talk to him all day long. He’s someone you can connect with right away.”
Anthony Vince Nail Spa: “I get my nails done at the Southpark location. My favorite technician is Hai, who’s fast yet very precise.”
SouthPark: “They have a little bit of everything under one roof at this popular mall, including Neiman Marcus, Gucci, and YSL.”
SHOWROOM: “This isn’t a traditional store, but a styling suite. It’s owned by stylist Erika Hanks. She dresses some of the most famous women in town. The space is very pretty, too, with Gucci wallpaper and big mirrors.”
The Mint Museum: “This is a great Uptown museum filled with contemporary art. They bring in lots of interesting exhibitions as well.”
