If you’ve been on TikTok recently, you’ll have no doubt seen the talks of a “twee revival” or rumors of the 2014-era Tumblr girl style coming back into the forefront of fashion. The truth is that clothing trends are incredibly cyclical, and with fast-paced technological advancements increasing the rate at which we experience nostalgia, it makes logical sense that trendsetters are already returning to styles that were ubiquitous just a decade or so ago.
The good news is that you probably have most of these trends hanging at the back of your closet, which means it is now time to bring these styles back into rotation with a 2022 twist.
Here are 9 pieces you probably have in the back of your closet that are cool to wear again:
Yes, the comfortable cold weather boots are incredibly popular again, especially the Ugg Classic Ultra Mini. Pair them with light wash bootcut jeans (more on that in a moment), neutral knit, and black Patagonia puffer to rock them the 2022 way.
2) Bootcut Jeans
The denim styles you wear can mean the difference between appearing current and outdated. While skinny jeans are a hotly-debated topic, bootcut jeans have taken center stage once again as the cool denim look. Personally, I think these look great in dark indigo and black washes when paired with simple button-down shirts and stacked heels for a breezy French girl look.
3) Juicy Couture Tracksuits
You kept that velour tracksuit for a good reason! The Juicy Couture velour tracksuit was once seen as the height of athleisure luxury, and now it’s back in a big way. Can’t you see Maddy from Euphoria rocking one of these bad boys?
4) Hobo Bags
Remember when every cool celebrity was traipsing around SoHo with one of these slouchy purses? Not only were they stylish, but the loose structure allowed wearers to fit all kinds of items in their bags so they were ready for whatever. Do yourself a favor and swap out your boxy bag for a hobo.
5) Peter Pan Collars
As mentioned earlier, the “twee revival” is in full swing. Think Zooey Deschanel, Anthropologie, and ModCloth, with retro styles of the 50s and 60s making their way to the forefront. Peter Pan collars were a staple of Deschanel’s, adding a cute little accent to sweaters and pinafore dresses. Try a bib collar for the 2022 twist.
6) Circle Skirts
Another staple of the 2010s? Circle skirts! Frankly, I don’t know why we stopped wearing these because they are really flattering and easy to wear.
7) Ballet Flats
I am always on the hunt for comfortable flat shoes, and it could be time to bring ballet flats back. Look for simple styles in neutral hues like blush or black. If you want to get a little avant-garde with it opt for a square toe ballet flat.
8) Colored Tights
There may be a new Gossip Girl on HBO Max, but we know there’s only one Queen B to inspire your style choices: Blair Waldorf. Blair was a pro at rocking brightly colored tights with her school ensembles, and I say it is high time to bring some fun back to your hosiery.
9) Bomber Jackets
Bomber jackets were everywhere for a moment and then they vanished…at least, until now. In 2021 the puffer jacket was the outerwear option of choice, but I suspect bomber jackets will make a comeback. The 2022 version is oversized, neutral-colored, and minimalist.
