Mardi Gras charm Cap-Haïtien, bringing smiles to residents during pre-carnival and carnival festivities | PHOTOS

From a terrifying vodou present, during which a manbo fed zombies popcorn and ougan whipped them, to mardi gras masqueraders strolling on The Boulevard, Cap-Haïtien had an entertaining pre-carnival and carnival interval. The next are some vibrant pictures from the exhilarating performances.

CAP-HAÏTIEN — Cap-Haïtien revelers had been handled to a chilling Vodouesque carnival spectacle for the ages on the Boulevard between Feb. 21 and March 4. Oungan (Vodou monks) whipped “zombies” with martinets, performers caught lwa—Vodou spirits—and trembled on the bottom, whereas manbo (Vodou priestesses) fed popcorn to the undead, all a part of a weird and electrifying show of Vodou rituals.

Masqueraders embodied zombies of just lately deceased public figures, together with President Jovenel Moïse and rapper Black Alex.

About 100 attendees adopted the spectacle, strolling from Avenue 24 to Avenue 29. Kids laughed and screamed in disbelief, whereas a couple of backed away in concern. It was one of many pre-carnival exhibits held each Sunday at The Boulevard.
